North Cross's Carter Athletic Center offers fitness programs for seniors.

healthy environment. Roanoke City has reduced its
carbon emissions by 15 percent since 2005, avoiding
$578,000 in energy costs. The Citizens for Clean &
Green Business Coalition, which represents the top
12 employers, reduced the business carbon footprint
by 33 percent, avoiding $2 million in energy costs.
The variety of individual housing such as patio
homes and townhomes, and the region's retirement
centers are second to none. Luxury condos are available in downtown and near the hospitals and in the
new South Peak community growing on a hillside at
the Roanoke city and county south border. Cherry Hill
condos in South Roanoke are within sight of a hospital
and near a free trolley line for quick trips to downtown.
Low-maintenance patio homes continue to be built
throughout the valley, and structured retirement centers offer independent living in cottages with two-car
garages and options for greater care, should the need
arise.
At The Glebe retirement community in Botetourt
County, residents not only have beautiful views in a
rural setting, but they can hear scholarly lectures or
enjoy music from the likes of Grammy winner John
McCutcheon. Brandon Oaks in southwest Roanoke
city already had a pool, but this year it will open a
therapeutic gym, the John P. Fishwick Rehabilitation
Center, named for the late Norfolk Western railway
CEO. The community's Pines apartments have "green"
features.
The list of organized communities is extensive.
Friendship Manor, in north Roanoke, is just blocks
from a major shopping center. The Virginia Veterans
Care center is next door to the Salem VA Medical
Center. Richfield Retirement Center, also in Salem,
includes lakeside cottages.
The weather even cooperates to encourage living in
the area. Average temperatures run from 46 degrees in
January to 87 in July. Average total snowfall from 1948
to 2012 sits at 21 inches, enough to encourage visits to
parks and nearby ski slopes. I
