Men have always sought retreats
- as have women - but the man cave
has become ubiquitous. The online design center Houzz has a special section devoted to such projects. HGTV
offers "Dude-tastic Man Caves," and
Popular Mechanics online presents
some "extreme" projects. Last year,
"Good Morning America" even did a
segment on "manscaping" about nail
salons providing services to men in a
man cave setting.

At About the sAme time DIY
Network launched a man cave design
series in 2007, Dennie Denison of Salem built his new house. The 1972 Tech
grad went all out on his project, adding
Hokie-stone details on the exterior of
his home, painting heat pumps in Tech
colors and including a lodge-style retreat in the home's lower level. The area
satisfies all the "cave" elements: comfy
furniture, big televisions and access to
beverages. Audio and video are operated from a central control system
installed by Audiotronics, a Roanoke
audio-video company.
Denison, who owns Denison Insurance Agency, is first vice president of
the Roanoke Valley Hokie Club and
responsible for the group's main fundraiser, an annual gathering at Hotel
Roanoke. He has been collecting Tech
items since he was a student and most
days wears some clothing item with a
Tech logo.
The large entertainment area in the
Denison home includes furnishings
upholstered in Virginia Tech colors and
a wet bar counter custom-designed in
those colors. The same colors enhance
the bathroom, which includes a urinal
and faucet handles that resemble goal
posts, acknowledging that this is a place
for guys, although Sherrie Denison
shares her husband's fondness for Tech.
Adjacent to the family room in Techstyle is the real man cave - it says so
