alongside five state parks, around (not up) pointed
mountain peaks, and through long, low meadows and
grazing land, it offers plenty of scenery for a ride of a
few hours or a full day.
From Lewisburg, I head up Route 219 to Hillsboro,
home of the Pearl S. Buck Birthplace, and grab lunch
at the Pretty Penny Café, which is known for its locally
grown cuisine as well as live bluegrass music on Friday
nights. The café is loaded with antiques, country store
memorabilia, and wall-to-wall bookcases filled with
used books, and I settle in at a front porch table to
watch the local traffic go by.
After lunch, it's time to take in some hiking at nearby Watoga State Park, where the one-mile Arrowhead
Trail provides access to the Ann Bailey lookout tower.
From here, I take in westward facing views of the high
elevation plateau here known as Little Levels.
Just north of Hillsboro, I take a side journey down
Route 55 to gain access to the 43-mile Highland Scenic Highway, which passes through the Monongahela National Forest and alongside the 35,864-acre
Cranberry Wilderness Area. Over 150 miles of trails
are accessible from this scenic byway, which offers
sumptuous views of the Allegheny Mountains as it
curls around and onto mountain peaks, showcasing
a landscape more akin to Canada than the southern
Appalachians.
Highlights along the way include the Cranberry
Glades Botanical Area, where four high-elevation
bogs occupy a space above 4,000 feet. A half-mile
boardwalk winds through the glades, which encompass about 750 acres. Walkers with a keen eye will
notice a multitude of plant species along the trail,
including Jack-in-the-Pulpit, skunk cabbage, pitcher
plants, and a variety of orchids.
Heading west from Cranberry Glades, drivers can
veer onto Forest Road 223 to access the trailhead to the
Falls of Hills Creek, a series of three tumbling waterfalls
in a narrow cavity between Point and Spruce Mountains.
After a day of exploring the sites along the Highland
Scenic Highway, I head north to Cass Scenic Railroad
State Park, where historic train lovers can climb aboard
an old logging train, guided by steam locomotive, to
the top of Bald Knob. Bald Knob is the Mountain State's
second highest peak at 4,842 feet. Be warned, however
- the roundtrip ride takes about five hours, and steam
engines don't climb mountains with any speed. The
nearly 360-degree views of the Alleghenies from the
mountaintop though will make the lengthy journey
worthwhile, however. And while you're here, enjoy
historic evening digs in an old company house! I
