Kissito PACE
A Nursing Home Alternative
This all-inclusive senior care program keeps patients in
the community and out of the nursing home.

SHORTLY BEFORE NOON ON a Wednesday,
Jeffrey Keeling watched TV in the theater room at
Kissito PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the
Elderly) as he waited for lunchtime. After lunch, the
PACE van that transported Keeling to the center will
take him back home. Keeling follows this routine on
Mondays and Wednesdays. He sees his doctor while at
the center, and he picks up his medicines, packaged in
bubble-wrapped doses by the time of day they are to
be taken. When Keeling needed therapy after a broken
shoulder, he got it at the center.
Kissito PACE, the first all-inclusive care program for
the elderly in the Roanoke region, opened in November 2013 at Valleypointe near the Roanoke-Blacksburg
Regional Airport. The Medicare-Medicaid-certified
program is a one-stop shop designed to keep persons
55 and older in need of specialized care out of nursing homes. A PACE program's services include adult
day care with nursing, as well as all areas of therapy:
audiology, dentistry, optometry, podiatry and speech
therapy, respite care and personal care. If someone cannot shower at home, he or she can shower at the center.
A hair salon is also on the premises.
Keeling, who has had a leg amputated, learned of
the program when his wife came home from work with
a brochure about it. Before he decided PACE would
work for him, he "Googled it. . . thank goodness for
Google." Keeling joined the program at the beginning
of the year after turning 55 and says he would go to
PACE more often if he did not have to go to a dialysis
center on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. On the
two weekdays, Keeling's wife takes him to the dialysis
center on her way to work, and the PACE van transports him home.

& CEO of Kissito Healthcare, which operates nursing
homes in Virginia and Arizona. Its Virginia facilities
are in Hot Springs, Lebanon, Bastian, Low Moor and
