A good education requires more
than hours in the classroom memorizing the Periodic Table of Elements and
writing book reports on Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. Students in the
Roanoke Valley benefit from resources outside of the classrooms that prepare
them for successful careers. The various school systems in the valley provide
excellent learning opportunities that extend beyond the school walls.
The Fine Art Of Learning
Residents of the valley are fortunate to be surrounded by such a
rich arts and culture scene. Live music and dance performances,
art exhibits and festivals, and numerous history museums are all an
integral part of the high quality of life valley residents enjoy. These
organizations are doing more than entertaining audiences, however.
In 2015, the partnership program between Roanoke City Schools
and the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra (RSO) was recognized with
a Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award. The program, which
has been in place for quite some time, connects students with
professional musicians, both local and visiting, without the costs
of transportation.
"It is a pretty extensive program with a lot of flexibility," says Cari
Gates, the fine arts coordinator for Roanoke City Schools. "When
the symphony musicians are in town, players will come out to the
schools to do master classes with the students. It's a wonderful opportunity for the kids to build a relationship with the professional
players and to elevate their level of playing."
RSO's Maestro David Stewart Wiley especially goes above and
beyond to educate students throughout the valley about music
and performing. "It's not unusual for Maestro Wiley to go out and
conduct the kids and provide feedback to the instructors," says
Gates. "The directors find it very useful for David to come in and
work with the kids."
