Q: Tell us about your business.
A: Wood's Service Centers, Inc. is a family-owned and operated
company offering automobile repairs, towing/recovery, and fleet
and truck repair services to the Roanoke Valley. This past year, we
proudly celebrated our 60th anniversary.
Wood's offers two full-service automobile repair facilities, both
located in the Town of Vinton, on Washington Avenue and Hardy
Road. We offer routine maintenance services, such as oil changes,
brakes, suspension repair and A/C repair, as well as full diagnostic
tests and diagnosis of the "hard-to-find" vehicle running issues
and "check engine" lights. Woods is proud to offer one of the most
competitive tire programs in the valley, offering a variety of tires and
tire services at both of our Vinton locations.
Wood's Towing and Recovery is one of the most complete light
and heavy duty towing fleets in the Roanoke Valley. Our fully-trained
operators offer 24-hour services, seven days a week, to the citizens of
the Roanoke and surrounding areas. We also offer 24-hour emergency
service to our customers and citizens in need. Wood's Fleet and
Truck Service is located at 1749 Granby Street in the City of Roanoke,
offering fleet maintenance and repair for large trucks and fleets.
Q: Please share a brief history of your company.
A: Wood's began in 1957 as a small gas station in Vinton, started by
Robert "Bob" Wood and his wife, Margaret. During the '70s, Bob's two
sons, Barry and Tommy Wood, became very active in the business
working alongside their father to learn the automotive business.
Through time, Barry was able to build the auto parts division,
eventually leading him to open his own store on Hardy Road in
Vinton. Tommy stayed focused on the service and repair aspect of
the industry and expanded his divisions throughout the years to the
locations mentioned above. During the 1980s, the original location
on Washington Avenue was demolished due to road expansion, but
the company rebuilt a larger facility, which still occupies the same
property on Washington Avenue. Soon afterwards during the 1990s,
Tommy's vision of opening a second repair facility and Fleet Center
came to light and two more divisions were started. During the 1980s
and '90s, Tommy's son Allen joined the company and, alongside his
father, expanded the Towing and Recovery division, as well as the
Specialized Equipment Transportation Division of Wood's.
Q: What is unique about your business that sets it apart?
A: Honestly, there are several key things that set Woods Service
Centers apart. We are proud to say we just celebrated our 60th
year in business. We take so much pride in knowing generations
of families we have served over the years. Our customers are like
family, and we take pride in providing trustworthy services to them
year after year.

Secondly, we truly are a "family owned business." We are
currently in our THIRD generation of family being involved in the
business! In addition, we consider all 36 employees as part of our
family. Our business is what it is today due to the commitment of
our staff. Finally, as a small business, we take pride in staying as
technologically advanced in our industry as possible. In today's
world of automobile and truck repair, customers do not have many
options for repair outside of the dealerships. It is extremely difficult
for independent shops to keep up with the diagnostic technology
and training required to fix the current vehicles on the roads today,
and we strive to stay on top of the newest trends and training.
Q: What does it mean to be recognized as a "Best of 2018" award winner?
A: Knowing this award is chosen by the readers of The Roanoker and
the members of the communities in which we live and serve, it truly
is an honor to be recognized. For all of us here at Woods, this means
a job well done. We know there are so many reputable choices for
the readers to choose from, and we consider it such as honor to be
chosen. We cannot express to the readers how much we appreciate
