The Memorial honors the Allied forces that
participated in the invasion of Normandy on June
6, 1944, during World War II. With its stylized
English Garden, haunting invasion tableau, and
striking Victory Plaza, the Memorial stands as a
powerful permanent tribute to the valor, fidelity,
and sacrifice of D-Day participants.

Booker T. Washington was one of the most
influential and powerful African American
leaders from 1895 until his death in 1915. A
prominent statesman, advisor to three U.S.
Presidents, orator and writer, he helped establish
Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and promote
black education throughout the South during
a time of resistance and civil injustice towards
African American equality. His experiences on
the 207-acre tobacco plantation as an enslaved
boy would shape his character and adult
philosophies of education and race relations in
post-Civil War America. Learn about his life and
contributions by watching a video, an interactive
exhibit, and touring the living history farm.

At Monticello Thomas Jefferson was president,
at Poplar Forest he was himself. The octagonal
retreat house was the place where Jefferson
"came to indulge in the life of the mind and renew
his personal creativity." When his presidency
ended in 1809, Jefferson visited the retreat three
or four times a year, often staying for several
months at a time during planting seasons.
Smith Mountain Dam Visitors Center
Have you ever wondered how a dam converts
flowing water into electricity? The hands-on
exhibits and audio/visuals at the visitors center
tells the story. The dam was completed in 1963,
with the lake reaching full pond water level of 795
feet in March 1966. Development and recreation
on and around the lake has risen ever since.
