War events in Virginia and the
places you can visit to learn about
and experience them.
April 1861: Virginia secedes
from the Union and Richmond
becomes the Capital of the
Confederacy. Visit the Museum
and White House of the
Confederacy, Richmond National
Battlefield Park, the Virginia State
Capitol and the American Civil
War Center at Historic Tredegar.

November 1861: Freedwoman
Mary Smith Peake begins teaching
at the "contraband camp" of Fort
Monroe. The school would give
rise to the Hampton Normal &
Agricultural Institute and
eventually Hampton University,
one of the leading historically
black universities in the nation.

July 1861: Battle of First
Manassas. Visit Manassas National
Battlefield Park's visitor center
atop Henry Hill where Confederate
General "Stonewall" Jackson
earned his nickname. NV
March 1862: The first battle of
ironclad warships takes place in
Hampton Roads Harbor between
the USS Monitor and the CSS
Virginia. See the Monitor's turret,
cannons and steam engine at the
Mariners' Museum in Newport
News. HR
April-June 1862: During the
Peninsula Campaign, Union Gen.
George McClellan attempts to take
Richmond by landing in Hampton
and marching west. Visit Fort
Monroe, dubbed "Freedom's
Fortress" for runaway slaves, in
Hampton and Lee Hall Mansion

and Endview Plantation in
Newport News. HR
May 1862: "Stonewall" Jackson
defeats Union forces up and down
the Shenandoah Valley. Visit sites
of the Shenandoah Valley
Battlefields Foundation and, in
Lexington, The Stonewall Jackson
House, Virginia Military Institute,
and Lee Chapel at Washington &
Lee University. SV
December 1862-May 1864:
Approximately 110,000 casualties
occur during four major battles -
Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville,
Wilderness and Spotsylvania -
making this the bloodiest ground
in North America. Visit
Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania
County National Military Park, the
second largest military park in the
world. NV
January 1863: President
Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation
Proclamation, an executive order
proclaiming the freedom of slaves
in 10 states, takes effect.
Visit the Emancipation Oak on
the grounds of Hampton
University and the Hampton
University Museum featuring the
art of African and Native
Americans. HR
June 1864: The Battle of Cold
Harbor is followed by a 10-month
Siege of Petersburg. Visit
Richmond National Battlefield
Park and Petersburg National
Battlefield. CN
Summer 1964: A series of
campaigns rages up and down the
Shenandoah Valley. Visit Hupp's
Hill Civil War Park in Strasburg
and the Virginia Museum of the
Civil War in New Market. SV
April 1865: The fall of Richmond
and Lee's surrender. Visit
Appomattox Court House National

Historical Park. A few days later,
President Lincoln tours the former
Confederate capital of Richmond.

April 14, 1865: President
Lincoln is assassinated at Ford's
Theatre in Washington D.C. His
assassin, John Wilkes Booth, flees
to Maryland and then into Virginia
where he is killed on April 26.

near Petersburg. At Civil War

Civil War rations, sleeping in a
tent and participating in drills and
