In 2003, MACS Worldwide assumed the role of continuing the tradition of recognizing individuals who have made outstanding career contributions to the mobile A/C and heat transfer industry. On Friday, February 8, 2013 the Mobile Air Conditioning Industry Pioneer Award will be presented to the following five individuals at the MACS Worldwide Delphi Keynote Luncheon during the MACS 33rd Annual Training Event and Trade Show. T Doyle Deese Doyle Deese was born in a farmhouse near Bynum, Texas. Upon completing high school, he went to work for General Dynamics. World War II was in full force so after only a short time working at General Dynamics, he volunteered for the U.S. Army and was trained for radar systems. When the war ended he returned to General Dynamics. Doyle also spent a short stint in the insurance business, where he learned sales skills and how to deal with people. He became an expeditor and a purchasing agent for LTV where he learned about aerospace parts. He moved into sales for the Airco Supply Company, a supplier to LTV. He traveled across the country selling aerospace and military hardware and fasteners for Airco. Airco taught him the basics of distribution business, and in 1971, he founded his own company, Santech in Grand Prairie, Texas. Doyle initially planned to sell aerospace and military hardware and fasteners, but an o-ring manufacturer presented him with an opportunity to also distribute o-rings to the commercial market in North Texas. O-rings were a new product and this business began to grow rapidly. As a part of this business opportunity, Santech started selling parts to a new industry, aftermarket mobile air conditioning systems and their manufacturers, including ARA, John E. Mitchell, and Alamo Manufacturing. Santech supplied the parts for the aftermarket-installed units, but also developed a new niche: repair kits. There was a need to 34 ACTION • January / February 2013 service the aftermarket A/C units in the field, but a good method of supplying small parts did not yet exist. Doyle developed box kits with printed inserts to help in the repair process. Kits were also developed for the original equipment units that were in some cars. In the early 1970’s, a market began to develop for rebuilding mobile A/C compressors. Initial volumes were not high so the same problems were evident as with supplying the parts. Doyle again filled a need for the industry by developing bag kits for the rebuilders with all of the seals necessary to rebuild the compressor. Santech published the first catalog for rebuilders with compressor drawings detailing the parts required to rebuild the compressor. Santech has continued to develop systems for supplying replacement parts, and today is a leader in supplying small parts to the automotive air conditioning aftermarket. Doyle Deese had a simple business philosophy—“Treat people fairly, and they will usually return the favor. Devote yourself to your business and enjoy life!” Doyle has three children, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, all of whom live nearby in Arlington, Texas. Chuck and Judy Gilmore The husband and wife team of Chuck and Judy Gilmore founded Gilmore Products in Orlando, Florida in 1973. Their vision was to supply automotive aftermarket parts to Florida with the three guiding principles of quality, service, and price. While both were employed in other professions, they created a business in their garage. Chuck Gilmore continued his profession as a firefighter while devoting
