T
he label Mobile Air Conditioning Society is sometimes a
misnomer. Why, you ask? Because the mission of MACS
and the businesses of our members also cover engine
cooling systems and all the components that comprise
it. With that in mind we turn our attention to one
important part of the engine cooling system, the heater core.
The heater core, which actually looks like a mini
radiator, is located inside the passenger compartment of
the vehicle, quite often very deeply buried in or under the
instrument panel.
Hot coolant flows through its internal tubes, and
air from the blower fan moves through it to warm the
interior of the vehicle.
Seems simple enough, right? Not so fast: heater cores
have distinctions too like every other A/C and engine
cooling system component. MACS member, Pro Source
Heater Core of Fort Worth, TX, took the time to answer
some questions about heater cores we sometimes find
perplexing.
Q. Your line includes aluminum and copper/brass
heater cores – do you make copper brass replacements for
applications that were originally aluminum? If so, why did
you decide to do so?
A. Pro Source makes copper-brass replacements for
applications that came from the factory as original
equipment (OE) aluminum; however, Pro Source always
recommends replacing OE copper-brass with copper-brass
and OE aluminum with aluminum.
There are some applications that fall outside of this rule
of thumb, which mostly are intensely rugged applications,
such as fleet vehicles (think taxi cabs or emergency
vehicles running nearly 24 hours a day). Copper-brass

offers a more robust lifespan than aluminum in our
opinion and is, in most cases, a stronger repellent of
erosion/corrosion and electrolysis than aluminum. We
also offer many aftermarket aluminum replacements for
applications where the original equipment was copperbrass, due to price pressure from the end user and copper
being such a volatile commodity.
Q. What exactly is a “mechanical” or “continuous fin”
heater core? What are the advantages of such a design?
Pictured above is an example of a continuous fin
heater core.
