MACS call for board of directors nominations
The Mobile Air Conditioning Society has been blessed with energetic
and visionary volunteer directors through its 34 years of existence. Some
have served a single two-year term, offered their views and ideas, and then
moved on. Others have been returned to office again and again by vote
of their peers and have served passionately and actively for many years. All
have made a worthwhile contribution and selflessly promoted the interests
of all MACS members.
Being nominated to stand for election to the board is not a long,
convoluted process. It can be as simple as a member making his or her
interest known to the MACS board or staff. If a qualified member has an
interest in serving on the board, there is nothing wrong with that member
nominating him or herself.
There are, of course, established criteria for selection of candidates to
the board ballot, but these are straightforward and practical. One is the
requirement that candidates have been members in good standing for
a minimum of four years, and have participated in at least two recent
conventions. These requirements are to ensure that the candidate is
actively engaged in the organization.
At a minimum, candidates for director must be willing to attend three
board meetings a year (one in conjunction with the annual MACS
Convention), and contribute any other time that is necessary. Beyond
their key role in setting the strategic direction for MACS, directors
normally contribute based on their interest, expertise or sphere of
influence.
Each section of the membership (Service, Distribution and
Manufacturing) is represented by four board members. Two seats from
each section are up for election each year, and each director serves a
two-year term. This mechanism is to ensure year-to-year continuity of
programs and projects.
A Nominating Committee is tasked with presenting a slate of
two candidates for each available seat on the board. While this is the
guideline, circumstances sometime dictate that fewer or more than four
candidates are presented on the ballot to each section’s members. If, in
the unlikely case that there is too large a field of candidates in any given
year, additional criteria such as needs of the MACS Board for balanced
representation (geographic, etc.) may be considered by the Nominating
Committee, and some of the potential candidates may be placed on the
ballot in a subsequent year.
More often, however, the field of candidates is not so crowded
and qualified candidates – whether self-nominated or nominated by
others – are placed on the ballot. Each member in good standing has an
opportunity to vote, votes are returned to the MACS CPA for counting,
