Halla Visteon makes
A/C for fuel cell vehicles
Halla Visteon Climate Control Corp. (HVCC)
is supplying an array of technologies to support
the world's first mass-produced hydrogen fuel
cell electric vehicle manufactured by Hyundai
Motor Group. Introduced in Europe in 2013, the
ix35, also known as the Tucson, is slated for a
limited U.S. distribution this spring. The Tucson
is a compact crossover SUV. Products supplied
by HVCC include a centrifugal air compressor,
coolant heater, high-voltage cooling module and
positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heater,
and an HVAC system with an electric compressor.
The centrifugal air compressor provides clean
pressurized air to the fuel cell stack, which generates all the electrical power on-board to propel and operate the vehicle. The air compressor
features a high-speed brushless DC motor with
a patented, oil-free and angular ball bearing
design. This air compressor technology was a
finalist for the 2014 Automotive News PACE
Award in the product innovation category.
GM fuel cell fleet tops 3 million miles
General Motors' fleet of fuel cell vehicles
recently passed 3 million miles of hydrogenpowered, real-world driving. Some individual
vehicles have accumulated more than 120,000
miles. By GM's estimate, using hydrogen to
power these vehicles, the fleet has avoided
157,894 gallons of gasoline consumption.
Last year, GM announced a long-term collaboration with Honda to co-develop next-generation fuel cell and hydrogen storage systems,
aiming for potential commercialization in 2020.
In addition, GM and Honda are working together with other stakeholders to further advance hy-

drogen refueling infrastructure, which is critical
for the long-term viability and consumer acceptance of fuel cell vehicles.
