MACS Training Event and Trade Show a big success "Meet me @ MACS, Make Connections that Matter," was the theme of MACS' 35th Annual Training Event and Trade Show at the Caribe Royale Hotel and Convention Center, February 5-7, and that's exactly what happened as 1000 attendees from all across the globe gathered to learn, network and do lots of business in the $12-billion dollar mobile A/C and engine cooling industry. The heavy duty and off road session was well attended "The MACS board and staff were very happy with the positive vibe of this event as we saw increased member and vendor participation. We are extremely grateful to our sponsors and presenters who sustain us and make this important, independent gathering of our industry possible," remarked Elvis L. Chairman Andy Fiffick honors MACS president Elvis Hoffpauir for 35 years of service 36 ACTION * April 2015 In Memoriam Art Hobbs Art Hobbs, a former Chairman of the Board of MACS who is numbered among the industry's Pioneers, passed away on Monday, March 9. Dr. Stephen O. Andersen, Director of Strategic Climate Projects for the U.S. EPA through 2009 recalls meeting Art in the earliest days of the mobile A/C community leadership in protecting the stratospheric ozone layer. "Art was working for Murray, which was one of the companies that was helping the Environmental Protection Agency negotiate the development, testing, certification, and commercialization of the first CFC-12 recovery-recycle technology. "The goal was to make sure the cleaning performance of the recovery equipment would satisfy automobile manufacturers for service under new car warranty. Working quickly, the team accomplished all that in about a year including an SAE standard, a UL test method, and the first UL certification for performance (rather than just safety). "Art was a born leader, an honest broker, and a trusted advisor. He was a problem solver and a team builder. He had a sense of humor and he knew the importance of consensus. For this and much more he earned the 1993 Stratospheric Protection Award (at that time working for Four Seasons). "Others will know his career path and will remember his leadership in the companies he worked for and on the Mobile Air Conditioning Society. I remember Art as a good friend and champion of the ozone layer. Art changed the world for the better," Andersen acknowledges. Mr. Hobbs was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, and attended Dundalk Community College and Towson State University. After serving in the United States Air Force, in the mid-1960's he owned and operated several radiator and A/C service shops, installing aftermarket air conditioning. From 1970 through 1991, he worked for the Murray Corporation and directly controlled product additions and deletions, pricing and cataloging. He developed marketing and sales programs and the training of all independent sales agents and the NAPA Temp direct sales force. He joined Four Seasons as marketing manager in 1991, implementing sales incentive programs and increasing sales with national marketing groups and the Standard Motor Products sales force. In 1997, he joined Long Manufacturing in Carrollton, Texas, and in 1998 created his own business as an industry consultant. Mr. Hobbs has a distinguished list of industry achievements including the development of Four Seasons and Standard Motor Products' training, marketing and sales programs for R-12 to R-134a retrofit, guiding Murray Corporation's manufacturing expansion into heater cores, fan clutches, accumulators and refrigerant recovery and recycling equipment, and developing a consolidated evaporator program with Murray Corp. and Long Manufacturing for Ford and General Motors vehicles. Recognized as an industry leader, Mr. Hobbs was selected as one of the original members of the EPA's CFC ad hoc committee for development of the Clean Air Act of 1990. He received the EPA Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award in honor of exemplary efforts to protect the ozone layer, and co-chaired the SAE committee that developed R-12 to R-134a retrofit procedures.
