old manual RRR machine. An initial performance test reveals surprisingly high vacuum.

Figure 7: If equipped with an air ballast, open
one turn and observe your vacuum micron
reading. It should rise. This ballast allows the
pump to evacuate without forcing moisture
into the oil. Open the ballast for the evacuation and close for the last 15 minutes.
Figure 5: Seriously contaminated oil may
require a flush cycle. Left to right...old oil,
flush # 1, flush # 2.

Figure 4: A Robinair repair tech showed me
this trick years ago. When draining, run the
pump, have it pull fresh air and block the
pump outlet intermittently with a finger. This
forces intake air to exhaust out the oil drain
and forces contaminants to exit with the oil.
Figure 8: Moisture-laden oil, with other contaminants as well.
When using my thermistor vacuum gauge, I typically connect it in-line with my gauge set or attach it to an available service port on the system (preferred). Base your readings on the
capability of your vacuum pump.
1. Run your vacuum pump and observe the thermistor gauge. If the reading steadily drops and heads toward zero microns, this indicates the system is tight.
2. Run the pump for 10 minutes, close valves to isolate the pump, then shut the pump down. Observe the reading on your thermistor gauge. (Note: be sure to isolate the pump
from the system by closing your manifold valves. If the "check valve" in your pump is faulty, vacuum may draw pump oil through the gauges into the system).
3. If the reading quickly stabilizes and doesn't climb at all, the system is tight and dry. Continue the evacuation.
4. If the reading starts to climb steadily but slowly, continue observing the gauge reading. If the reading slowly climbs but then stabilizes, there is probably moisture in the system,
meaning the water boiled and then stopped when the pressure climbed. If this happens, continue the evacuation until the gauge reading holds at high vacuum (low micron reading).
5. If the reading starts to climb steadily and heads toward atmosphere, you have a leak in the system. Check again for leaks and repeat the vacuum tests.
6. For best results, the new normal is a 45 MINUTE EVACUATION. Increase evacuation time accordingly for cool ambient, high humidity and larger systems.
