and service technicians choose the best approach for
making A/C hoses in your shop or parts store.
SAE standards have been established to ensure the
products available in the industry that meet the requirements
listed in these standards, perform at a high-quality
level. Many of the automotive and mobile OEMs include
the requirements of these standards in their individual
requirements for air-conditioning systems. The standards
referenced in this issue of MACS Service Reports can be
found and purchased on the SAE website, www.sae.org/
standards. See Figure 1.
There are several technical committees at SAE. Many of
the standards covering MAC systems are the responsibility
of the Interior Climate Control Standards Committee.
Within this body, there are five committees, the Steering
Committee; the Service Standards Committee; the OEM
Standards Committee; the Fluids Standards Committee;
and the Supplier Standards Committee. SAE J3062 and
SAE J2064 are under the responsibility of the Supplier
Standards Committee. SAE J2911 is under the responsibility
of the Steering Committee. Each of these committees
are represented by industry experts from automotive and
mobile manufacturers around the world along with the
supplier and service base supporting the industry. v
Part 1: SAE Standards for Automotive Refrigerant Air-Conditioning
Hose and Hose Assemblies
In June of 1993, SAE released SAE J2064 titled, " R-134a
Refrigerant Automotive Air-Conditioning Hose " . This
standard was issued at the same time R-134a was replacing
R-12 in automotive and mobile air-conditioning
systems due to the ozone depleting environmental issues
associated with R-12. This new standard combined
the requirements for bulk air-conditioning hose and
hose assemblies.
Since the original release of SAE J2064, the standard
has been revised several times to include new requirements
and refrigerants as the industry has evolved with
new technology, and efforts to reduce refrigerant emissions
to the atmosphere thus improving the reliability
and performance of automotive and mobile air-conditioning
systems.
There was an inherent issue with SAE J2064 when it
was issued. There are companies which supply bulk airconditioning
hose, hose fittings,
crimp equipment and hose and
tube assemblies. Bulk hose historically
has included a marking on
the hose which says " SAE J2064 " .
Since the standard combined the
requirements of the hose and the
assembly, the assembly could potentially
have issues in the field
with inferior fittings, crimp specs
or hose which do not meet the
requirements of the standard. Assemblies
were being marketed as
meeting SAE J2064 (marked on
the hose) with no marking on the
fittings. This was the main driver
to split the standard and create a
new SAE J3062 which establishes
the requirements for the hose
alone.

SAE J2911 Requirements
The SAE Interior Climate Control Standards Committee
developed SAE J2911 " Procedure for Certification
that Requirements for Mobile Air-Conditioning System
Components, Service Equipment, and Service Technician
Training Meet SAE J Standards. " This standard lists
the procedures required for manufacturers, test facilities
and providers of technician training with procedures in
order to certify compliance with SAE standards.
Manufactures of mobile air-conditioning products and
equipment who advertise that their products meet the
requirements of SAE J standards shall follow the test
procedures described in SAE J2911. Only manufacturers
who certify to SAE J2911 can advertise that their products
meet SAE J standards. In summary, if a hose is marked
" SAE J3062 " or a hose assembly is marked " SAE J2064 "
it must be certified to SAE J2911. SAE has provided a link
Figure 2: The SAE MAC database website is where you can find the manufacturers and their
products which have been certified to meet the various SAE Standards, including those certified
to J2064 and J3062.
