Establishment of SAE J3062
Following the release of SAE J2911, SAE J3062 was issued
in June of 2015 (Revised in January 2021 to include
requirements for R-152a systems and added a new hose
Type G) to establish the requirements for bulk automotive
and mobile air-conditioning hose. A statement was
included in the Scope of SAE J3062, " A hose which
meets the requirements of SAE J3062 may not meet
the requirements of SAE J2064 " 1
.
There is no guarantee that the combination of bulk
hose, fittings and crimp specifications will produce an
assembly that will meet the requirements of SAE J2064.
For example, if three different suppliers of bulk hose tested
their product to SAE J3062, they may all meet these
requirements. If assemblies are made with these three
different bulk hoses, it is possible that not all of these assemblies
will meet the requirements of SAE J2064. This
is why the following statement is included in the revised
SAE J2064, " Fabrication of permanently attached fittings
to refrigerant hose requires specialized assembly
equipment. A refrigerant hose from one manufacturer
may not be compatible with fittings supplied by
another manufacturer. Similarly, assembly equipment
from one manufacturer may not be interchangeable
with that of another manufacturer " 2
.
Although SAE J3062 ensures that the specific manufacturer's
hose can be successfully coupled to a fitting,
it is the hose coupler's responsibility to ensure that the
combination of coupling type and specific hose manufacturer's
hose material will meet the requirements of
SAE J2064.
At the same time, the scope of SAE J2064 was
changed in August of 2015 (Revised in April 2021 to include
requirements for R-152a systems), to establish the
assembly requirements for factory and field coupled
hose assemblies. In addition, a statement was included
in the scope of SAE J2064, " A hose which has met the
requirements of SAE J3062 and certified in SAE J2911
shall be used as part of the coupled assembly. A hose
which meets the requirements of SAE J3062 does not
ensure the assembly will meet the requirements of
SAE J2064 " 3
. The Hose Assembly Identification section
of the revised J2064 now states that the fittings must be
marked (metal stamped or tagged) SAE J2064. Assemblies
moving forward would now include hose meeting
SAE J3062 marked on the hose and fittings meeting SAE
J2064 marked on the fittings. v
Part 2: Test Requirements for Bulk Automotive Air-Conditioning
Hose and Hose Assemblies
Automotive and mobile air-conditioning hose is a very
important component in the system. First, it provides the
" flexibility " required on the plumbing assemblies which
are routed throughout the vehicle. Automotive and mobile
A/C hose is constructed with various elastomeric
and thermoplastic materials and may include a reinforcement
layer to provide pressure burst strength. The
hose must contain the refrigerant charge and minimize
exterior moisture from entering the system. In addition,
various low side suction hose designs minimize noise
transmission from the A/C compressor to the evaporator
which helps keep the interior of the vehicle quiet and
improves occupant comfort and overall satisfaction.
Now let's look at the two SAE standards to see where
they are used together to produce a high-quality hose
assembly for mobile air-conditioning systems.
Included in SAE J3062, " Automotive Refrigerant AirConditioning
Hose Requirements, " are bulk hose requirements.
Hose size, types, moisture vapor ingression
hose classes and hose identification requirements are
listed in the beginning portion of the standard.

The hose types include Type A - Elastomeric, Textile
Reinforced; Type B - Elastomeric, Wire Reinforced; Type
C - Barrier, Textile Reinforced; Type D - Thermoplastic,
Textile Reinforced, Elastomeric Cover; Type E - Veneer,
Textile Reinforced; Type F - Veneer, Barrier, Thermoplastic
Liner; and Type G - Thermoplastic, Textile Reinforced,
Thermoplastic Cover. Detailed descriptions of these
hose constructions are included in the SAE standard.
The main section of SAE standards is testing. There
are many test requirements for bulk automotive (mobile)
air-conditioning hose.
Included in SAE J2064, " Coupled Automotive Refrigerant
Air-Conditioning Hose Assemblies, " are the requirements
for coupled hose assemblies which contain factory
or field coupled hose fittings and crimping tools. As
stated previously, the assembly must contain a hose that
has met the requirements of SAE J3062 and certified to
SAE J2911. The tests are as follows:
COMMON TESTING - SAE J3062 and SAE J2064
Both SAE J3062 and SAE J2064 have the following
tests included in each standard:
1SAE J3062 JAN2021 Scope
2SAE J2064 APR2021 Section 3.1 Hose
SAE J2064 APR2021 Scope
