There is an optional moisture ingression test referenced
in the standard. The acceptance criteria is under
development and will be determined in a future revision
of SAE J3062. See Figure 7.
Test Verification to Certify Compliance According to
SAE J2911
Contained in the last section of both SAE J3062 and
SAE J2064 is Appendix A - Test Verification Table to Certify
Compliance According to SAE J2911. The appendix is
a table which lists each of the requirements of the SAE
Standard, the test value observed for each test, the test
organization, and date the test was completed. This table
is then used to submit for certification.
Additional Testing Commonly Performed at the
Automotive and Mobile OEMs
Listed below are a few of the common additional tests
beyond those listed in SAE standards:
Pressure Impulse Testing: Pressure impulse testing
Figure 7: Moisture Ingression Test.
TESTING UNIQUE TO SAE J2064
As stated earlier, in order to meet the requirements in
SAE J2064, " A hose which has met the requirements of
SAE J3062 and certified in SAE J2911 shall be used as
part of the coupled assembly " 4
. In summary, in order to
meet SAE J2064, a hose must be used in the assembly
which meets all of the testing requirements described
earlier from SAE J3062 and the hose must be certified to
SAE J2911.
The following tests are performed in SAE J2064 only:
Assembly Burst Pressure Requirements: This test
establishes the burst requirements for hose assemblies.
SAE J3062 established the burst requirements of the
hose only. SAE J2064 establishes the burst requirement
for the assembly depending upon the application. There
is a chart included in the standard which lists the requirements
for liquid, discharge and suction assemblies.
Cleanliness Test: This test establishes the requirements
for cleanliness of the interior (bore) of the hose
assembly. It is important for the automotive (mobile) airconditioning
system to be free from excessive moisture
and foreign material.
Refer to SAE J2064 for the complete list of hose assembly
requirements (hose assembly marking and identification,
components for field coupled hose assemblies, etc.).
is a common test for hose and hose couplings. This test
is not included in the SAE J Standards but is a common
test for automotive and mobile manufacturers. Hose assembly
samples are typically filled with oil at a controlled
temperature. The test apparatus will cycle pressure from
0 PSIG to a pre-determined high pressure then back to
0 PSIG. The test apparatus is set for cycle rate, normally
in cycles per minute. The test will terminate at a pre-determined
cycle count, roughly 250,000 cycles. Figure 8
illustrates a typical pressure impulse test setup.
Figure 8: Pressure Impulse Test
Materials Testing: In addition to materials testing
which is required in SAE J3062 (Aging, Extraction,
Ozone, etc.), it is common for automotive and mobile
manufacturers to require additional materials testing.
Testing would include expanded materials exposure testing
to refrigerants and compressor oils. Once exposed,
the material must meet requirements for tensile strength
(the resistance of a material to breaking under tension)
and elongation (the amount of extension of the material
