Let 's start with Ohm's Law.
No, I not going to show you a lot of boring calculations,
though you can occasionally make use
of the Ohm's Law formula in some troubleshooting
situations See Figure 1. Ohm's Law is the best representation
I know of to understand the relationship
between voltage, resistance and current flow. And
the first misunderstanding I want to tackle is " What
is voltage? " v
Figure 1: The Ohm's law triangle is a useful tool for calculating
volts, amps and ohms.
Voltage
We all know the water analogy and we all likely
remember how our instructor explained that voltage
was the pressure forcing water through the hose.
See Figure 2.
Figure 2: Remember how we learned about voltage using
the water analogy?
No, it 's not.
Voltage is not a static measurement. When you
measure the voltage in a battery, for example, it isn't
like you can put the battery on some kind of scale to
see how much voltage is in there. Voltage is a measurement
of the electromotive potential between
the meter's test leads, or two points in a circuit.
Please read that again - voltage is a measurement
of the potential (think of it as a pressure difference)
as measured between two points in a circuit.
Take your meter and put the positive meter lead
on the positive post of a fully charged battery, and
the negative meter lead on the ground post. I'm
sure you won't be surprised when you see a reading
of 12.6 volts. See Figure 3. The view I want you
to shift, though, is how you view and understand
this measurement. The negative side of the battery
has a huge supply of free electrons, dying to attach

Place the probes across the posts of a new battery and
you should read approximately 12.6 volts.
themselves to something. That 's a lot of pressure,
or electromotive potential. The positive side of the
battery is woefully lacking, with zero pressure. The
DIFFERENCE between the two points you are measuring...
is what you are measuring!
Here's another way to think about it. Remember
the water hose example? Is it the pressure behind
the water forcing it out of the hose? Think about it
before you answer.
NO! On the other side of the hose opening is atmospheric
pressure, correct? Let 's just say it 's an
even 15 psi for argument 's sake. The pressure the
pumping station is putting behind the water has
