NORMA JEAN GARGASZ
The 18th-century attacks on Spanish settlements that gave rise to the presidios continued into the 1860s, when the US Army built Fort Bowie to protect a Butterfield Stage station from the Chiricahua Apaches. It was the Apaches who gave the allblack regiments trained at Fort Huachuca the respectful name of Buffalo Soldiers; a museum at this still-active post in Sierra Vista details their story. Another bulwark against Apache attacks, Tucson’s Fort Lowell highlights late 19th-century military life. Also in Tucson, the Pima Air & Space Museum counts rare World War II aircraft among its collection of historic flying machines. At the Titan Missile Museum, just south of Tucson, you can descend into the control center of the only one of the country’s 54 Titan misq Pima Air & siles that wasn’t destroyed by Space Museum, treaty with the Soviets. BIRDWATCHING
With almost 500 migrating species making rest stops at its ecologically diverse Sky Islands, southeastern Arizona ranks as one of the United States’ five top birdwatching spots. Top avian havens include the Madera Canyon Recreation Area, featuring some 200 miles m Spot hundreds of bird species, such as this wren of scenic trails; the (above left), at Ramsey Canyon Preserve. Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve, protecting a rare waterside habitat; Ramsey Canyon Preserve, known for its hummingbirds; and the Willcox Playa Wildlife Area, with its annual sandhill crane gathering. Sierra Vista makes a great base for birding day trips—several nearby B&Bs are especially birder friendly.
