We zona University students and visitors to the Grand Canyon— Flagstaff has a collegial collegiate scene, with good cafés and restaurants and a bustling nightlife. One of the town’s several brewpubs also distills prickly-pear vodka. Sightseeing highlights include the Museum of Northern Arizona, exploring the native history, art and geology of the Colorado Plateau, and the Lowell Observatory, where Pluto was discovered in 1930 (Flagstaff is still mourning its demotion from planet status). t 260 Oak Creek 260 179 Village of Oak Cr . One of the m Grand Canyon Railway, Williams company’s biggest hits, the spur to the Grand Canyon introduced in 1901, has made a major comeback, with tours and packages that include winter’s Polar Express. America’s subsequent post-World War II romance with the automobile led to Route 66’s glory days. You’ll see holdovers from that era on the main drag of Williams, the last town to be bypassed by Interstate 40; in Winslow, celebrating classic car culture with its “Take It Easy” mural; in Holbrook, home to the Wigwam Motel and lots of dinosaur kitsch; and at such popular roadside holdovers as the Jack Rabbit Trading Post. www.arizonaguide.com 65 RICHARD MAACK RAILS & ROADS PINAL M 191 e River FEDERAL HIGHWAYS 60 NATIONAL PARKS & MONUMENTS STATE PARKS Sa lt GO MO 377 AT 77 277 180 ZUNI TONTO NATURAL BRIDGE LL 10 O Heber EA U 260 Overgaard Payson 83 STATE HIGHWAYS MOGOLLON R IM FORT APACHE 260 FOOL HOLLOW LAKE Snowflake Taylor 61 60 191 LYMAN LAKE Show Low Pinetop-Lakeside Hon-Dah McNary Springerville . 12 Carrizo 260 Greer Eagar 261 M T S 273 INDIAN ROADS SCENIC ROADS INDIAN RESERVATIONS POINTS OF INTEREST Cherr y 60 77 SAN Rive r 73 Whiteriver FT.
