Nicknamed “The Zoo” because it originally (in 1931) housed a taxidermy collection, The Museum Club in Flagstaff is anything but stuffy. You can two-step to top country western bands in this huge log cabin, a Route 66 classic.

Northern Arizona’s largest city—its population of 60,000VERDE FORT s Clea ebbs and flows with the arrival and departure of Northern Ari-r Cr. We zona University students and visitors to the Grand Canyon— Flagstaff has a collegial collegiate scene, with good cafés and restaurants and a bustling nightlife. One of the town’s several brewpubs also distills prickly-pear vodka. Sightseeing highlights include the Museum of Northern Arizona, exploring the native history, art and geology of the Colorado Plateau, and the Lowell Observatory, where Pluto was discovered in 1930 (Flagstaff is still mourning its demotion from planet status).

The Fred Harvey Company introduced high-quality hotels and restaurants—not to mention the famous Harvey Girls—to the Santa Fe Railway line in the early 20th century, putting Northern Arizona on the tourist map for East Coast travelers. One of the m Grand Canyon Railway, Williams company’s biggest hits, the spur to the Grand Canyon introduced in 1901, has made a major comeback, with tours and packages that include winter’s Polar Express. America’s subsequent post-World War II romance with the automobile led to Route 66’s glory days. You’ll see holdovers from that era on the main drag of Williams, the last town to be bypassed by Interstate 40; in Winslow, celebrating classic car culture with its “Take It Easy” mural; in Holbrook, home to the Wigwam Motel and lots of dinosaur kitsch; and at such popular roadside holdovers as the Jack Rabbit Trading Post.
