MINING HISTORY
A precipitous mountain road leads to Jerome, where you’ll find the mansion of mine ow n e r Ja m e s “ R a w h i d e Jimmy” Douglas, the Jerome Historical Society and Mine Museum, and the Gold King Mine and Ghost Town. GlobeMiami highlights its ongoing mining industry through displays at the Gila County Historical Museum, a former mine rescue station, and Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum, showcasing a 240ton haul truck bed. Farther east, Clifton’s late-19thcentury houses attest to the town’s copper-mining past; up the mountain, in Morenci, the industry is very much alive, as evidenced by the huge open-pit copper mine.
