COWBOY CULTURE
The disputed mine claims, family feuds and vast cattle-grazing spreads of southeast Arizona helped create the enduring legends of the Old West. They’re still enshrined here, both in fact and fiction. At Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park, for example, you can get the lowdown on the OK Corral showdown. For cowboy film buffs, there’s Old Tucson, built in 1939 for the filming of Arizona, and the Rex Allen Museum in Willcox, celebrating the singing cowboy film star. Just want to play cowpoke for a week—or a day? Work cattle and bunk at one of the area’s many guest ranches, go horseback riding in the mountains, chow down in a cowboy-themed steakhouse or do the two-step to live country western bands.
OFFBEAT AZ
Now a University of Arizona earth sciences research center, Biosphere 2, about 24 miles north of Tucson, earned worldwide notoriety in the early 1990s, when two groups of men and women were sealed into the terrarium-like central enclosure. This experiment in self-sustainability was satirized in the 1996 Pauly Shore comedy Biodome.
POPULATION
Arizona’s Western movie history comes to life at Old Tucson.
ASTRONOMY
Clear nights, dry air and abundant mountain ranges— not to mention ordinances against light pollution in Tucson—make Southern Arizona some of the most astronomy-friendly real estate on the planet. The observatories on Kitt Peak, Mt. Graham (in North Central Arizona) and Mount Hopkins draw astronomers from around the world. Kitt Peak National

Observatory offers nighttime stargazing programs year-round; the others have seasonal daytime tours. Among Southern Arizona’s less formal programs for the star-struck is one at The University of Arizona’s Flandrau Science Center, which also runs astronomy camps for adults and teenagers, and Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter, which boasts the state’s largest telescope (32 inches) dedicated to public viewing. Or see how enormous telescope mirrors are crafted at The University of Arizona’s Steward Observatory Mirror Lab.
