BARBECUE SIGNATURE CUISINE
Barbecue is more than a menu item in Kansas City-it's
been a way of life since the early 1900s. And yet, with more
than 100 area restaurants dedicated to the cuisine, there's
always something new to try:

SLAP'S BBQ

* Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que: A mecca for many
barbecue pilgrimages, this gas-station institution
is a frequent stop for visiting celebs and
dignitaries.
* Jones Bar-B-Q: A favorite of the Fab 5, the
sisters behind this small operation in Kansas
City, KS- " Shorty " and " Little " Jones-were the
heroes behind a Season 3 episode of Queer Eye.
* Scott's Kitchen: For breakfast or lunch, the
fusion menu at this aviation-themed eatery
near the airport is stuffed with barbecue
tacos, burritos and sandwiches.

FOUNTAINS

* Nicknamed the City of Fountains,
the KC metro touts more than 200
fountains-more than anywhere else
in the world, except maybe Rome.
* KC's ﬁrst fountains, dating back to the
late 1800s, served a purely utilitarian
purpose: for thirsty horses, dogs and
birds traveling to and from the city,
put there by the Humane Society.
Over time, the fountains became
more ornate and decorative.
* The oldest fountain in KC actually
isn't from here. Inside Rozzelle Court
restaurant at The Nelson-Atkins
Museum of Art is a bowl fountain of
ancient Roman construction, circa
220 A.D.
* KC's ﬁrst municipal fountain was
situated at 15th & Paseo as part of
master landscaper George Kessler's
vision to develop the area. Though
no longer standing, the fountain cost
Kessler $12,000 in 1899-or roughly
$370,000 in today's money.
