PERRY BAKER Visitors to Devils Fork State Park enjoy activities on Lake Jocassee and the amazing waterfalls. PERRY BAKER DEVILS FORK STATE PARK Also along the 112-mile scenic Highway 11, known as the Cherokee Foothills National Scenic Byway, is Devils Fork State Park and its claim to fame-the alluring Lake Jocassee. The lake features some of the best trout fishing in all of South Carolina plus majestic waterfalls accessible only by boat and scuba diving in some of the cleanest and clearest waters in the Southeast. Another perk comes during spring visits when the rare Oconee bell blooms along the Oconee Bell Nature Trail. Our highlight was a pontoon boat tour with Jocassee Lake Tours. Setting out mid-morning from the public boat ramp, we spent the day oohing and ahhing at several spectacular waterfalls that tumble from the mountains into the clear waters of Lake Jocassee. We took several swims in the crystal-blue waters and watched some hardier souls rock-jump from the steep cliffs. The lake features waterfalls accessible only by boat. Our lakeside villa (one of 20 options) was as spacious as those at the other locations. Plush furniture included club chairs and a leather recliner sofa. The screened-in porch overlooking Lake Jocassee sported rocking chairs and a table for four, a grill, a fire pit and easy access to the beach along the lake. Sleep came easily and peacefully since we were home in another beloved state park base camp. PLAN AHEAD Ready to stay in the great outdoors?
