Chapter 8. Passenger Special Plates Issued by Branch: Purple Heart: Purple Heart plates feature a replica of a Purple Heart medal. Update - April 2015: Per the Valor Act II the Registry of Motor Vehicles is in the process of redesigning the " Purple Heart " license plate that is issued to recipients of the Purple Heart medal. The plate will continue to display an image of the Purple Heart medal, but will now read, " Order of the Purple Heart Recipient " and " Combat Wounded " . The redesign and manufacture process can take up to four months after a design has been finalized. The RMV will mail replacement plates to current plate holders, and provide an update on the RMV website when the new design is available. 10/16 NOTE: For Active Duty Members of the Military, the word Veteran on the plate will be covered by a decal that is labeled Active Duty. A. Definition: Purple Heart plates are issued to veterans who have been awarded a Purple Heart medal. A Purple Heart medal recipient must prove that s/he has been awarded a Purple Heart in order to receive these plates. Purple Heart recipients are eligible for one (1) set of plates for each Purple Heart medal received (either passenger or motorcycle). You must present one of the following documents to a full service RMV office to verify your eligibility: * A DD-214 that indicates " Honorable " in the Character of Service box (which will not always be located in the same place on the form. Note that only the long form (full page) DD-214 is acceptable; the short form (half page) cannot be accepted. * A DD-215 (which is an amended version of the DD-214) that indicates an Honorable discharge. * An Honorable Discharge from (this was used during WWII and the Korean War). * In order to be acceptable, the information on the form presented must be typed (never handwritten). Regardless of what document is presented, it must state that the customer was Honorably Discharged and that he/she was awarded the Purple Heart medal.
