Chapter 1-6 Supporting Documents This section describes the supporting documents used in processing registration transactions and the procedures to be followed. Supporting documents are the paper copy of legal documents used to prove vehicle ownership or to substantiate a transfer of ownership. Certificate of Origin - A Certificate of Origin is a document prepared by the automobile manufacturer for every new vehicle manufactured. On the front of the Certificate of Origin is information pertaining to the vehicle, manufacturer and buyer. On the back of the Certificate of Origin the seller assigns or “signs over” the Certificate of Origin to the buyer. The buyer must then apply for a title. The dealership to whom the vehicle is delivered is listed on the Certificate of Origin as the original owner. A Certificate of Origin is used for the following transactions: • Registration and Title (RT) • Registration Transfer (RX) • Title Only (TO) Certificate of Title - A Certificate of Title is a legal document providing proof of ownership of a vehicle. On the front of the title is information pertaining to the vehicle, vehicle owner and lien holder(s) if listed. If a lien is listed and the loan has been satisfied, the Lien Release portion of the title will be completed. The lien holder's name, authorized signature and date are required. On November 26, 1990, the title law was changed to require all newly purchased motor vehicles and trailers weighing more than 3,000 lbs. regardless of age to be titled. 1:26
