(Rep) proteins and the role that Rep proteins
played in AAV DNA replication and gene expression.
Much of Nick's body of work has become a part of the
AAV canon and is foundational for recombinant AAV
gene therapy.
Although Nick routinely agreed to review articles, his
turnaround time was notoriously long. However, when
asked for input on a project or for laboratory's reagents,
Nick rapidly responded and often the reagents arrived
within a couple of days. Early in my career, I asked Nick if
he would be willing to serve as my reference for job applications.
Nick's response was positive, but with his
characteristic humor: ''I wrote a letter for [this person], so
I guess I can write one for you.'' I got thejob and remained
in contact with Nick through the nearly four decades since.

Nick, a foundational contributor to AAV gene therapy,
was also a true pioneer in the study of AAV as a virus. He
never stopped working on the critical basic science issues
central to AAV biology, using his insights to guide the
more applied aspects of his work. There were few who
could do both vectorology and virology at his level. He
was a role model as a scientist, and very much appreciated
as a generous caring colleague.

When I was in Nick's laboratory in the mid-late 1980s
for my graduate studies, it was a time of great excitement
and productivity. Nick had attracted an amazing scientific
team to his laboratory who worked on complementary
projects studying transcriptional control, DNA replication,
genetics, and gene transfer; these discoveries and insights
were so interesting and were acquired utilizing the latest
technologies of that time. Over the decades he recruited
strong teams to new enterprises, all while consistently
contributing fundamental understanding and applied aspects
that moved multiple fields forward. He was an excellent
scientific mentor, colleague, and inventor. But above all,
Nick identified interesting and important research areas, and
his science was creative and ofthe highest quality. He leaves
a legacy full of scientific and medical accomplishments that
are in practice now and will perpetuate well into the future.
