IN MEMORIAM
search. Living in the latter world, we knew Nick mostly
through his publications, of course, but our personal interactions
were through the International Parvovirus
Workshops that have occurred every 2 years or so over
almost four decades. Nick was a fixture at these meetings
for as long as we can remember.
Our professional interactions were particularly close
during the 1990s, when both of our laboratories were trying
to dissect the molecular details of parvoviral DNA replication,
in vivo and in vitro. Following Nick's work during
this time was fundamental to our own progress, and we had
many stimulating conversations during the workshops of
that era, which we remember fondly. The banquet at the
Miami meeting was particularly poignant since it marked
both Nick's and Sue's formal retirement from active research.
Nick was a fine gentleman and superb scientist who
will always be a major part of our collective memory.
Rest in peace, Nick.

ported during World War II from occupied Ukraine to
Germany where Nick was born soon after the war ended.
The family went against the grain and ended up in America.
This is where I met Nick, my fellow Ukrainian (by genes)
and my adviser, as it turned out, for more than 30 years.
Soon after defending my PhD, I mailed letters from
Kyiv to several laboratories in Europe and United States
(including Nick's laboratory) looking to continue my research
on the other side of the Iron Curtain. None were
answered, no surprise there. Then, the Chernobyl's nuclear
reactor explosion happened, and our first child was born
4 days later. That tragedy and his Ukrainian genes reminded
Nick about my unanswered letter gathering dust
somewhere. He answered the call and brought me, and my
family in, like so many people around the world hosting
Ukrainian families in their homes right now. Once the war
is over, most of the refugees will return home, but some
will stay to find new homes in other countries, like my
family did 33 short years ago. The history repeats itself,
and we need to pay forward, like Nick did, answering my
call and changing our lives forever.
