LEGACY GIVING
Unknown Hero
Victoria man anonymously leaves multimillion-dollar
family fortune to BC Cancer Foundation
W
GENERATIONS
IN THE MAKING
The family fortune had been passed
down through generations in a trust
fund, untouched.
"This donation is a heartwarming example of a son honouring his
father's philanthropic wishes made
decades earlier," Roth says.
Roth says the Foundation's legacy
donors, who give gifts of all sizes,
are heroes to BC Cancer scientists
and clinicians. "The forward thinking in leaving a bequest to the BC
Cancer Foundation is an act of incredible compassion. I see firsthand the
progress these gifts make in bringing
life-saving treatment solutions to the
people who need it most, often when
no other sources of funding exist."
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
If you're including a gift to the BC Cancer Foundation
in your will or any other document, please use our
correct legal name. Hundreds of charities in Canada

name will ensure your intentions are carried out.

PARTNERS IN DISCOVERY

hen the Victoria lawyer
passed away, he left behind
no family.
His legacy, however, will be felt for
generations by families in every community in our province. This generous
individual bequeathed more than $4
million to the BC Cancer Foundation
that will fuel cutting-edge research
and advance care for the people facing
cancer in B.C. for many years to come.
"The amount of this gift came as
a surprise to us," says Sarah Roth,
president and CEO of the BC Cancer
Foundation. "He was a kind and very
private man who had confirmed with
us that there was a gift to the BC
Cancer Foundation in his estate plans,
but never an indication it would be in
the millions."
A gift of this magnitude will
amplify many of the world-leading
research programs at BC Cancer.
Notably, funds will:
* Propel the world's most advanced
personalized medicine research
study, Personalized Onco-Genomics,
or POG, that's already enrolled 900
patients whose DNA and RNA are
sequenced to uncover newly targeted
treatment options
* Advance immunotherapy and
development at BC Cancer's Deeley
Research Centre in Victoria
* Elevate cancer research programs
with infrastructure to explore the
causes of and cures for all cancers at
the BC Cancer Research Centre
* Expand clinical trials programs
across the province, providing hope
and emerging treatment options to
people with advanced cancer.
