What Some of the Experts Say Several medical bodies have issued formal statements about the timing of breast cancer screening. Here are some of the major recommendations. U.S. Preventive Services Task Force: The USPSTF recommends screening mammograms every other year from ages 50 to 74. Women ages 40 to 49 might choose to begin screening if they place a "higher value on the potential benefit than the potential harms." American Cancer Society: Women at average risk of breast cancer should begin yearly mammograms by age 45; they can change to every other year starting at age 55. Women should have the choice to start yearly mammograms as early as age 40 if they wish. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists: Women at average risk of breast cancer should be offered a screening mammogram starting at age 40; women should begin mammograms no later than age 50. Mammograms should be conducted every one to two years based on a joint decision-making process between the woman and her provider and continue until at least age 75.
