business - policies ranging from supporting female entrepreneurs in Africa
to fisheries management to supporting
emerging technologies like autonomous
vehicles. Both here in the U.S. and around
the world, we bring the voice of the private
sector to the table in policymaking.

What resources are available from
the Department of Commerce?
As a bridge to the American business community, the Department of Commerce has
expanded trade and investment, opened
global markets to American products,
unleashed government data to drive
growth, spurred innovation with new
digital tools, promoted entrepreneurship,
expanded skills training and workforce
development. We have also helped

communities prepare for and prosper in
a changing environment, and made more
valuable data available to governments,
businesses and the public.
We work to support the competitiveness
of the U.S. business community in many
ways, but here are a few specific examples.
The U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service
boasts a global network of international
trade specialists at U.S. Export Assistance
Centers in more than 100 U.S. cities and
in U.S. Embassies and Consulates in more
than 75 countries that help American
companies export.
We have a network of "digital attachés"
in key markets, including Brazil, China,
Japan, India and the European Union.
These U.S. Commercial Officer attachés
advance commercial diplomacy, drive

policy advocacy on technology issues,
ensure linkages between trade policy
and trade promotion efforts, and provide
front-line assistance for U.S. small and
medium enterprises to take advantage of
the robust e-commerce channels.
The Commerce Data Service is developing cutting-edge software products and
Web services to improve access to and
use of departmental data resources of all
Commerce's 12 bureaus.
The Startup Global initiative helps
entrepreneurs and early-stage companies think globally from day one by
providing the know-how and technical
assistance they need to export their goods
and services efficiently and effectively.
The program is administered through
a public-private partnership with the
Global Innovation Forum, part of the
National Foreign Trade Council.

Ar e there specific problems faced
by U.S. exporters?
Exporting is a major driver of the U.S.
economy. In fact, in 2015, an estimated
11.6 million jobs were supported by
exports of goods and services. More than
304,500 U.S. businesses took advantage
of export opportunities globally in 2014,
and nearly 98 percent of these exporters
were small and medium-sized enterprises
(SMEs) with fewer than 500 employees.
SMEs accounted for 33 percent of U.S.
goods exports by value in 2014.
Many U.S. companies don't export or
