From the CEO The New Sheriff President Trump is often referred to as the new sheriff in town. THE GOOD: The world has not ended.There are no riots. The economy is still intact. The stock market is up. President Trump is pro-business. He is moving fast to try to keep his promises. He is dumping bad rules quickly. I recently testified on his regulatory approach before more than a dozen senators on the Commerce Committee and noted the high cost regulations impose on business. From the Labor Department overtime and organizing rules to the Federal Communications Commission power grab on privacy, the new Administration is reversing bad decisions and restoring regulatory sanity. More, Trump has backed off on his promise to dump NAFTA and his trade negotiator has suggested simply adding a new chapter to the deal. Trump is meeting and establishing relationships with foreign leaders. THE BAD: The anti-immigrant rhetoric has increased and H-1B visas are frozen. President Trump dropped us out of the Trans Pacific Partnership, sending a signal which has allies looking at a closer relationship with China. The border 2 MAY/JUNE 2017 adjusted tax (a House leadership proposal that does not allow import costs to be an offset against taxable profits) has not yet been killed although it has few visible supporters and the White House has given it mixed signals. A border tax (a 10-20 percent tax on all imports) may still be the revenue mechanism to offset lower corporate tax rates. CTA is fighting the bad proposals as innovation depends on the free flow of people and goods globally. We need the best and brightest. We need products and components flowing to and from our nation.
