In 2012, Nate & Sarah Ruben's
first son was born four weeks
premature. Knowing he was
at high risk of SIDS and having
already lost a child to miscarriage,
Sarah woke every two hours for six months to check for
breathing. The sleep deprivation led to a severe episode
of postpartum depression.
An engineering student at the time, Nate knew there had
to be a better way. He used his senior project to create a
video baby monitor that could read his baby's vital signs
without any electronics in the crib or on the baby.
Six years later, Smartbeat is so advanced it can report the
