Germany to Allow
Huawei 5G
Participation

GERMANY

Germany announced that it
would not exclude Huawei
from its fifth generation (5G)
network, as the European
Union readied its promised
autumn decision on if it would
include Huawei in its 5G
buildout. German regulators
stated that they wished to create "a level playing field" for
vendors. Currently, telecom
operators in Germany use
Huawei equipment and many
feared that excluding Huawei
would delay 5G deployment
and increase costs.

Innovation Hub
Launches in Dusseldorf
IT company Infosys in November
opened a new Digital Innovation
Centre in Dusseldorf aimed at
resolving the educational STEM
skills gap. The innovation hub,
focusing on cloud-based services, the Internet of Things, 5G
and artificial intelligence, will
link educational institutions with
European businesses. "The new
centre, along with our strategic
academic partnerships, will help
us build the next-generation of
technology talent," said Pravin
Rao, chief operating officer
at InfoSys.

MUNICH STARTUP LOOKS
TO DEVELOP AIR TAXI
Lilium, a Munich, Germany-based startup, plans
to produce one of the world's first flying taxis.
The company, which has raised more than $100
million from investors, has developed a prototype air taxi featuring four engines built inside
wings capable of rotating and enabling the vehicle to take off and land like a helicopter.

Cooperation
Germany and India have
pledged to increase cooperation in areas such as cybersecurity, climate change,
energy security and artificial
intelligence. German
Chancellor Angela Merkel
and Indian Prime Minister
Narendra Modi signed several cooperation agreements
during Merkel's visit to India.
In particular, the two countries' cooperation will focus
on resilience and environmental innovation. Speaking
on a recent air pollution
emergency declared in the
Indian capital of New Delhi,
Merkel stressed that "This
shows how important our
cooperation in the field of
environmental protection is,
especially, to also have
better environmental
standards."

Germany Looks to Boost Electric
Vehicle Subsidies, Infrastructure
In an effort to boost sales of low-emission vehicles, Germany intends to
increase government subsidies towards the purchase of such vehicles by
50% over the next five years, according to Reuters. During a speech at
Volkswagen's Zwickau factory celebrating the mass production of the car
makers' ID.3 electric car, German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced
the government would invest 3.5 billion euros ($3.85 billion) in building
charging stations for electric cars.
