A SPECIAL HOUSE CALL Phyllis Attman learned she had breast cancer in 1999 in a most unusual way. One afternoon, shortly after her biopsy, Phyllis heard her doorbell ring. When she went to open the door, Michael Schultz, MD, director of the Breast Center at UM St. Joseph Medical Center, was standing there. He had come to her house, wanting to deliver the news in person that her biopsy was, indeed, positive for breast cancer, but together they were going to take care of it and she would be fine. "The minute you hear the word 'cancer,' you are terrified," Phyllis says. "Michael knew that my husband was away and didn't want me to be alone when I heard. In my opinion, this kind of care is over the top." Phyllis and her husband of 62 years, Leonard, have been strong supporters of Dr. Schultz's work ever since.
