Each year, more than 600,000 knees and 400,000 hips are replaced in the U.S. Roughly 7 million Americans are living- often actively-with artificial knees and hips today. World War II veterans created wheelchair basketball in 1946. Since then, the National Wheelchair Basketball Association has grown from its original six teams to more than 200.
