Are you lacking some key vitamins and
minerals? The symptoms can be easy to miss.

Fatigue, muscle weakness, headache, dry skin-
do any of these conditions sound familiar? In fact,
who hasn't experienced one or all of these? While
they may seem like run-of-the-mill symptoms associated with
a tough workout, lack of sleep or a caffeine fast, they could
signal something more-a vitamin or mineral deficiency.
Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are common but often
go undiagnosed thanks to their subtle Symptoms. But
Gwinnett Medical Group Primary Care doctor Rashmi Kulkarni,
MD, with Covenant Family Medicine, says while there's no
denying vitamins and minerals are great for your body, you
can also have too much of a good thing.
"The only way to know if you suffer from a deficiency is a
blood test," says Dr. Kulkarni. "The symptoms-like fatigue
or dry skin-are generic and could relate to any number of
health conditions. When it comes to vitamins and minerals,
self-diagnosing is never a good idea and supplementation can
be hazardous to your health."
Here's a closer look at some of the most common vitamin
and mineral deficiencies, signs you may have a deficiency and
what you can do.

Vitamin D

milk allergy, darker skin, geographical location, sunscreen
and obesity.
If you are looking to get more Vitamin D from your diet, try
fatty fish (tuna, mackerel, salmon), fortified foods (orange
juice, breakfast cereal), cheese and egg yolks. "However,
you can't get all of your Vitamin D from food, so spending a
little bit of time outside enjoying the sun's rays isn't a terrible
idea, either," notes Dr. Kulkarni. Just remember that too
much sun can be dangerous, too, leading to skin damage and
possibly cancer. The Skin Cancer Foundation says just 10 to
15 minutes in the sun two to three times a week is enough to
get you the Vitamin D you need.

Often called the sunshine vitamin, Vitamin D is naturally
produced by your body when your skin is directly exposed to
sunlight. It can also be found in some foods, like egg yolks,
fortified milk and cereals, and shrimp.
"It promotes calcium and phosphorus absorption for
optimal bone health and ensures your immune system is
working in tip-top shape," explains Dr. Kulkarni.
A deficiency can be marked by unusual fatigue or tiredness,
depression, hair loss and bone or muscle pain. While it
may seem like a no-brainer to simply go outside on a sunny
