Having low cardiorespiratory fitness-how well the cardiovascular and respiratory systems supply oxygen to muscles during exercise-is associated with a 47 percent greater risk of mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety, and having a medium level of this type of fitness comes with a 23 percent greater risk, according to a study in the Journal of Affective Disorders. The researchers acknowledged that moderate- to vigorous-intensity exercise (see list to the right) is most effective for reducing common mental health symptoms.
