Why You Should Take Blood
Pressure Readings from Both Arms
BLOOD PRESSURE READINGS that vary from left arm to right arm could
signal trouble to your doctor.
Systolic pressure, which is the top number in a blood pressure
reading, is the maximum pressure the heart exerts while beating,
while diastolic pressure, the bottom number, measures the amount
of pressure in arteries between beats. Blood pressure is measured
in millimeters of mercury.
According to a study in the journal Hypertension, with each 5-millimeter
difference in systolic readings between the left arm and the right arm,
the risk of death from any cause increases by 5 percent; the risk of cardiovascular
death, by 6 percent; and the risk of a fi rst cardiovascular
event, by 9 percent.
Researchers examined data from 24 previous studies of blood pressure
in nearly 54,000 men and women older than 18. They concluded
that " blood pressure should be measured in both arms during cardiovascular
assessment, " so consider talking to your doctor about it.

the Achilles' heels of glioblastoma
and are working hard to figure out
a way to target it, " says Hui Li, PhD.
He and his collaborators, who found
the oncogene, AVIL, say it is essential
to the survival of glioblastoma
cells. Without it, the cancer cells die.
Scientists have already developed
many targeted therapies for other
cancers with a similar " oncogene
addiction, " and Li hopes his discovery
will lead to more effective treatments
for glioblastoma.
