Fructose Can Lead to
Fatty Liver Disease
OVERINDULGING IN FRUCTOSE, a type of sugar that's common in the
American diet, could result in serious liver problems. A study in Nature
Metabolism found that high consumption of fructose-found in table
sugar and foods such as candy, baked goods, cereals and soda-
increases the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, which can lead
to liver damage, cirrhosis (liver scarring), liver cancer and liver failure.
Researchers gave mice either a high-fructose diet or a control diet.
Within a few months, the mice receiving a high-fructose diet developed
fatty livers and had higher rates of liver tumors.
The study notes, however, that only long-term, excessive consumption
of fructose is a problem.

Drug Interactions
with Painkillers
OPIOID PAINKILLERS prescribed
by the dentist can pose particular
hazards for people age 65
and older. In that age group,
1 in 10 people whose dentist
prescribed opioids was also taking
medications for anxiety and
depression that should not be
combined with opioids, according
to a study in Pharmacotherapy.
As a result, those people had
a 23 percent increased risk of
visiting the emergency department or requiring hospitalization
within 30 days of receiving the
opioid prescription.
One issue is that dentists do
not always participate in the same
electronic medical records systems
as other providers, so they aren't
always aware of all the medications a patient is taking.
