SURGERY SNAPSHOT In and Out LESS PAIN. QUICKER RECOVERY. OUTPATIENT SURGERIES ARE ON THE RISE When you’re self-employed, taking time off for medical care can be worrisome. For 24-year-old Kristen Chriscoe, a quick, same-day surgery procedure at Central Carolina Hospital was the answer to her prayers. A native of Deep River, Kristen studied cosmetology at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington and is now a hairdresser at Illusions Salon in downtown Sanford. Kristen needed surgery to remove an umbilical cyst but was worried about how many days she would have to take off work. Her general surgeon, Steven Jurisich, MD, told her the surgery could be done quickly with minimal time off, so she scheduled her surgery for May. Kristen said the surgery was quick, easy and relatively painless. She was back at work cutting hair the very next day. “The next day I was moving slow, but I wasn’t in pain, and I didn’t have to take any of my pain medication,” Kristen says. “The incision healed well— you can’t see it at all, really.” Her experience at CCH is a common one. Same-day, or outpatient, surgeries are becoming a more regular occurrence at CCH. With same-day surgery, patients typically experience a shorter recovery time, have less pain and are back to their daily activities quicker. In fact, the hospital expanded its same-day surgery unit this past winter to accommodate the demand. “The surgery itself was about 30 minutes long,” Kristen explains. “The prep and recovery took a little bit longer, but it was a very short experience altogether—a good experience.” When Kristen isn’t cutting hair at the salon, she says her top hobby is riding her motorcycle. Thanks to her quick and easy experience at CCH, she was back on her Steven Jurisich, MD, bike in no time. General Surgery IS OUTPATIENT SURGERY RIGHT FOR YOU? Kristen Chriscoe’s same-day surgery had her back at work the next day. “... IT WAS A VERY SHORT EXPERIENCE ALTOGETHER—A GOOD EXPERIENCE.” –KRISTEN CHRISCOE FA L L 2 0 1 0 | 11
