After a hip revision, William Guilliams bounces back with a little hard work—and a lot of support
n avid outdoorsman, William Guilliams moved from New York to Deep River 23 years ago with his wife, Mary, and their daughter. The plan: to enjoy warmer weather and escape the heavy snow. According to William, “To do just about anything where I could get outside and do things.” But being immobilized with severe hip pain was not in William’s plans.

A Chance Encounter
When he accompanied Mary to her appointment with orthopedic surgeon Andrew Bush, MD, for a shoulder problem, Dr. Bush saw the pain William suffered as he walked. When asked about it, he told Dr. Bush that he had a shooting pain that would literally stop him in his tracks. Because William had had a previous hip replacement surgery several years prior, Dr. Bush suspected the need for a hip revision; that is, removing the old implant and replacing it with a new component.
Why a Hip Revision
Diagnosing the need for a hip revision may include a physical examination, X-rays and lab tests. The first thing an orthopedic surgeon will do is determine the pain level by comparing it with previous years and even before the original replacement. An X-ray can show if the implant has moved, and lab tests may help detect if there’s an infection. William, Mary and Dr. Bush discussed treatment options, and hip revision seemed to be the best course for William. “Mr. Guilliams was an excellent candidate for a revision,” says Dr. Bush. “He was highly motivated to comply with the recovery process and anxious to return to a normal lifestyle. Our goal was to relieve his pain and restore his mobility.”
