whAT’S NEw a spoonful of Memories This is the story of a very special spoon—a stainless steel engraved baby spoon. A keepsake of a birth, perhaps a first-born child. About 15 years ago, possibly more, it was given to a new mother who had a baby at Central Carolina Hospital. The new mom likely laughed at the first expressions when she put applesauce in her new baby’s mouth. She probably made airplane noises, making faces as she flew a spoonful of mushed green peas toward an awaiting hungry giggle. As the child grew, she may have tucked away the spoon to pass on to her grandchildren. Part Two is the story of a traveling spoon. Late in the afternoon on Saturday, April 16, the spoon possibly took flight across Sanford during that momentous storm, turning and flying high in the sky, landing 45 miles north on a lawn in Wake County—a lawn where Raleigh resident Paul Cyr happened upon it in his own backyard. Knowing how sentimental this spoon would be to the mother of the mouth it fed, he contacted Central Carolina Hospital to see if we could help find its owner. That’s where you become part of the spoon’s amazing tale. We all witnessed the path the tornado took that fateful afternoon, and we have felt the destruction and heartache it caused in our community. We know many people lost so much—their homes, family treasures, pieces of their history, and for two people, their lives. If you can help us return this family’s heirloom to its original owner, please call (919) 774-2194. This spoon still has a story to tell future generations.
