FROM THE CEO Together, We Can Be Strong his issue is dedicated to raising awareness and educating our community about breast cancer. Early detection allows patients to begin treatment in the ﬁrst stages of the disease, giving them a better prognosis down the road. And this can make all the difference for many in our community. In the spirit of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, empower yourself with knowledge as you read our fall magazine. Breast cancer has touched us all, and there are many ways we can stand strong. But while it’s a very serious illness, this issue is not about despair. Instead, it’s devoted to the uplifting message of hope, through efforts of education, support and prevention. Our cover story follows Julie Lemon’s personal journey, from discovery to diagnosis to treatment and beyond. There were unexpected twists and turns in her story, but she chose to “ﬁght” with a positive attitude that has helped her heal. In our focus on “co-survivors,” you’ll learn how vital the support of a daughter or a husband can be in a patient’s recovery. You’ll also learn that Central Carolina Hospital has its own support group that meets every month, and how many participants are active in community events such as Race for the Cure. Finally, you’ll be introduced to breast health navigator Gwyn Sandlin, who talks about her unique job at CCH. Her mission to help each patient navigate every aspect of the breast health journey helps our patients and community stand strong against the most curable cancer among women.
