Central Carolina HEALTH - Spring 2012 - (Page 6)

Back F or three years, Preston Clayton suffered recurring strep throat that would almost always be passed on to his two sisters, Kennedy and Kelsey—and occasionally to his mom, Kim, and dad, Don. Enough was enough. “Preston was missing school and other activities that he enjoyed,” Don says. “It wasn’t fun for everyone in the house to get sick either.” Because antibiotics weren’t helping, and Preston’s infections persisted, his otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat physician) recommended that Preston have both his tonsils and adenoids removed—a surgery that is commonly performed on children experiencing chronic sore throats and swollen, infected tonsils. Bouncing Five-year-old Preston Clayton’s favorite things ... football, baseball and Spider-Man. His least favorite? Tonsils The VIP Treatment The Claytons scheduled Preston’s surgery at Central Carolina Hospital last July. “It was important to his mom and me that Preston have enough time to recover before school started in August,” Don says. When the Claytons arrived the morning of surgery, they were immediately brought into Preston’s room. His parents were delighted by the VIP (very important patient) treatment. “His room was all ready with cartoons playing on the TV,” recalls Don, who was a patient at CCH himself when he was a child. “There was even a red wagon with a nice sheet and a stuffed animal in it to cart him off to surgery.” Don and Kim were also pleased that Preston was able to recuperate in his own room. “We didn’t want him to recover with other kids who just had surgery and weren’t feeling well.” Don was so happy with his family’s experience at CCH, he took a moment to write a thank-you note: “Our experience at CCH was far and beyond anything we expected. The billing department, nurses and staff were fantastic. We were thrilled.” Now tonsil-free, Preston is back to playing flag football at Grace Chapel and baseball at Deep River Optimist, and has returned to Mrs. Brown’s kindergarten class at Grace Christian School. 6 | SPRING 2012
