CNew Life rafti a Sanford resident now pursues her hobbies after lens implantation When Shirley Heath says she “stays busy,” it may be the under statement of the year. The Sanford resident, who is a wife, mother and grand mother, is also an artist, calligrapher, writer, photographer and crochet enthusiast who decided not to let cataracts and vision loss slow her down. After a friend mentioned reading an article about a new type of cataract removal and lens implantation surgery that often allows patients to stop wearing glasses—even for near vision—Shirley went straight to her ophthal mologist, Miles Whitaker, MD, to find out more. “They were so new at that time that Dr. Whitaker had not yet become certified with the ReSTOR® lens,” says Shirley. But once her doctor deter mined that she was an ideal candidate, she was willing to wait. “I stay busy and onthego,” explains Shirley, who also is the historian at Salem Presbyterian Church. “It was aggravating to deal with glasses and magnifiers when scrap booking and working on the computer.” Slowing down wasn’t an option for this active senior, who happily admits that she is 70 years old. 6 | WiNteR 2012 Miles Whitaker, MD, board-certified ophthalmologist ©getty images
