The 1,100-foot lazy river, waterslide and rapids of the River Bluff Water Experience wind through the lush landscape of the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa.
n a recent summer vacation, my family spent part of our time together in San antonio, enjoying every last drop of the jw marriott San antonio’s fabulous river Bluff water Experience. and it truly is that—a texas-sized experience— complete with a guitar-slinging cowboy, the smell of local barbecue whetting our appetites and the comfortable feeling of home. For me it is: i was born and raised in a small west texas town that, unlike the great city of San antonio, required us to get a bit creative when it came to entertaining ourselves. i have happy childhood memories of spending time with my grandfather, playing simple games that required little more than a deck of cards, a pair of dice and a healthy competitive spirit. that’s why i am so intrigued by a feature in this issue of JWM magazine about the importance and resurgence of game play. Not the virtual kind that has us glued to our smartphones and laptops, but the kind that gets us to slow down, step away from the screen and enjoy real human interaction—in the same room. of course this issue wouldn’t be complete without taking you on a journey to places you may have visited or are at the top of your travel wish list. San antonio is revealed to be a place where business and pleasure happily coexist. and we take you to the fascinating city of Hong Kong, a place i have been fortunate to visit many times, and where the jw marriott Hong Kong provides the perfect vantage point to explore this bustling metropolis. my pick to get the full local flavor of Hong Kong? the Stanley market—an outdoor maze of food stalls, collectibles and authentic wares—where both the novice and experienced market aficionado will feel comfortable. and speaking of collectibles, we all have them, perhaps collecting dust and, potentially, value. think of the desk you inherited from a great aunt. or the antique rocker you couldn’t resist at a local flea market. we speak with our furniture expert from christie’s to get a basic primer on how to determine whether your treasures have value or should be simply treasured for the invaluable memories they provide. childhood memories. travel memories. Hidden treasures that evoke memories. it seems to be an inevitable theme in this issue of JWM. i hope the words within these pages, as well as your stays at our jw marriott hotels throughout the world, evoke some of your own.
