OUR EXPERTS Knowledge. Experience. Curiosity. Clearly these are attributes that an expert must possess. The experts who speak to your passions in the pages of this magazine—from wellness to wine, from food to fashion—are noted authorities on subjects that not only inspire them, but our readers as well. Yet the path to expertise can embark from many divergent directions. We asked our JW experts, “So, how did you get here?” Peter Gago, Penfolds Wines He’s been referred to as one of the industry’s most contemporary winemakers, and Peter Gago is passionate when it comes to his art form. As Penfolds’ Chief Winemaker and Wine Enthusiast’s Winemaker of the Year (2005), Peter approaches the process scientifically—a trait he developed as a former high school math and chemistry teacher. “For me, it’s about knowing when to interfere and when to stay out of the way (of the winemaking process).” He’s in demand, touring internationally and educating wine lovers about winemaking and Australian wines. A co-author of three wine books, Peter was named one of the wine world’s most influential names of 2011 by Decanter Magazine. Pamela M. Peeke, MD, MPH, FACP (left) It was the gift of a microscope that piqued a seven-year-old tomboy’s interest in science, and an affinity for both science and people that led her to a pre-med major. Dr. Peeke’s career in medicine has spanned many spectrums—traditional, alternative and research. But it’s her study of how mental, nutritional and physical components integrate that has made Dr. Peeke an internationally renowned expert, author and speaker on health, fitness and nutrition. An avid athlete who practices what she preaches, Dr. Peeke leads The Peeke Performance Center for Healthy Living and also serves as the award-winning chief lifestyle expert for WebMD’s 50 million members. Well-Being Food & Drink During her studies at the London College of Fashion in the early 1970s, Geraldine Howard became fascinated by the effects that essential oils had on various skin problems, and she began mixing natural things in her kitchen to make beauty products. But it took a devoted mentor, Micheline Arcier, whose clinic in Knightsbridge helped pioneer the use of essential oils for health enhancement into the modern world, to make the future president and co-founder of Aromatherapy Associates believe this was a path she could embrace and pursue. Geraldine co-founded Aromatherapy Associates in 1985, and to this day, continues to develop skin, bath and body care products that transform a daily routine into something luxurious and deeply beneficial. Arts Geraldine Howard, Aromatherapy Associates (center) Lydia Fenet, Christie’s “I’ve always loved watching the auctioneers at auctions,” says Lydia Fenet. “Every auction is like a different performance.” Lydia has developed her own style over the last 10 years, described by some as “highly spirited.” She credits George McNeely, her boss at Christie’s, for being an incredible mentor, who loves to swap stories with her about the hilarious things that can happen while being on stage. A more serious part of being on stage: helping to raise a lot of money for worthy causes, such as at the Green Auction, held in April 2010, which brought in $2.4 million for the environment. Keri Glassman, Nutritious Life (right) As founder and president of Keri Glassman, Nutritious Life, a New York City-based nutrition practice, Keri advocates the importance of a whole-person approach to health and wellness: getting adequate sleep, managing stress, exercising and harnessing the joy in life. “You make better choices when you’re happier,” she says. A frequent guest on NBC’s The Today Show, where she shares nutrition and lifestyle tips, Keri’s real gratification comes from seeing the impact she can have on an individual. “When someone thanks me for helping them turn their life around for the better, well that means everything to me.” She shares her insights on nutrition in a book released in January 2012, titled The Slim, Calm, Sexy Diet.
