The Museum of Islamic Art ARCHITECT: I.M. Pei SPACE, REDEFINED A curvaceous art center in Spain, an austere museum for Islamic art in Qatar, a multitasking park in Korea, a working art warehouse in Switzerland. They are vastly diﬀerent spaces, but a single concept holds them together: All were created for rather traditional purposes—looking at art, listening to music, experiencing media, reﬂecting on nature—but so drastically redeﬁne the space in which these things happen, they can powerfully alter the way in which visitors experience time-honored cultural rituals. The movers and shakers of the architecture industry—starchitects, as they’re increasingly called—are permeating the world’s newest structures with an ineﬀable energy all their own. Pei’s ﬁrst Middle East commission, The Museum of Islamic Art, will never be overshadowed by the city’s future buildings. A park of dunes and oases sits just behind on the shoreline, a subtle backdrop to the beige Chamesson limestone-domed ediﬁce. The end result is a pioneering structure comprising a ﬁve-story main building connected to a two-story Education Wing, linked by a central courtyard. Facing north: a single, 45-meter window oﬀering stunning views of the Persian Gulf from all ﬁve ﬂoors.
