THE ON EARTH BY mar k gane m /////////////// ph o t o s B Y m ic h e l a rn a u d J WM MAGAZINE 74 j w m a r r i o t t. c o m photo credit photo credit photo credit The annual exhibit presented by New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is always a crowd-pleaser, kicked off to great fanfare each spring with a highwattage gala attended by luminaries from the world of fashion, Hollywood and beyond. Still, when this year’s event, dedicated to the late British designer Alexander McQueen, opened to the public, the response was much like McQueen’s fashion: over the top. The exhibit set records at the institution, causing lines around the block and driving the museum’s annual attendance to its highest level in 40 years. McQueen, who died in 2010 at the age of 40, pushed boundaries and buttons, reveled in dark imagery, set trends and had a flair for high drama and raging controversy. For all these reasons, and without a doubt, he was a fashion darling. But his popular appeal came as a surprise. Perhaps it’s owing to the fact that, beneath the sturm and drang, McQueen was a master tailor (he trained on Savile Row) with a strong romantic streak who never forgot that the object of fashion is to make the wearer more beautiful. Or maybe in these times of belt-tightening economics, there is an unmet thirst for attainable fantasy. Which of today’s designers are upholding Alexander McQueen’s legacy and ideals? Six fashion insiders weigh in on the following pages. We invite you to sit back and revel in the show. http://www.JWMARRIOTT.COM
